Graeme Souness has blasted “awful” Tottenham Hotspur after a 3-0 defeat by Manchester United at Old Trafford.

The Reds Devils stormed into a commanding lead courtesy of goals from Marouane Fellaini and Michael Carrick in the opening 19 minutes on Sunday.

All they were happy to do was be a wishy-washy five-a-side team playing on the half-way line with possession

United captain Wayne Rooney sealed the win before half-time to move Louis van Gaal’s side moved five points clear of their nearest rivals Liverpool.

Although Tottenham had 48 per cent possession at Old Trafford, Mauricio Pochettino’s side didn’t register a shot on target until David De Gea denied Harry Kane in the 90th minute.

Speaking to Sky Sports, former Liverpool captain Souness said: “That was an awful performance by Tottenham today.

“They just didn’t take part in the game. There was no aggression and it looked as though they turned up to play a practice match – and the stats back that up. They had one shot on target in the whole game.

“If you start with the very, very basics, you can’t play professional football without being aggressive.

“In that first 45 minutes, Man United were first to everything. They were the ones that were winning everything and going through the Tottenham players and on the front foot.”

Souness added: “The fact they ended up with 48% possession and Man United ended up with 52% here at Old Trafford would suggest Tottenham were very much in the game.

“They were never in the game. All they were happy to do was be a wishy-washy five-a-side team playing on the half-way line with possession.”

The north London side were two games unbeaten in the Premier League before their emphatic defeat by fourth-placed United at Theatre of Dreams.
