Liverpool transfers: Christian Benteke won’t leave, says ex-Villa man
Aston Villa legend Lee Hendrie rubbishes talk of Christian Benteke leaving Villa Park in the summer
Liverpool target Christian Benteke won’t leave Aston Villa in the summer, according to Lee Hendrie.
The Belgium international has been previously linked with a move away from Villa Park as the Birmingham outfit continue to battle relegation in the Premier League.
Obviously there is no World Cup this year, we’ll have him for another season at least and he will grow in stature
Liverpool have been touted as a potential suitor for the 22-year-old striker as manager Brendan Rodgers looks to bolster his Reds squad in the summer transfer window.
However, former Villa midfielder Hendrie, who is one of Chillisauce’s legends for their stag weekend five-a-side packages, expects Benteke to say beyond the end of the season.
“I don’t think he will [Villa],” Hendrie told The Sport Review.
“If he was going to go, he would have gone last season. He has found this season difficult with the injury and it has taken him a while to get back to fit – that hasn’t done him any favours.
“Obviously there is no World Cup this year, we’ll have him for another season at least and he will grow in stature.”
Benteke has scored five goals and has made three assists in 21 Premier League appearances for Villa this season.
The towering striker missed Belgium’s World Cup campaign in Brazil after he ruptured his Achilles tendon in April 2014, keeping Benteke sidelined for six month.
The Belgian has netted 33 goals in 77 Premier League appearances following his £7m switch from Genk in 2012.
