Ignacio Camacho has revealed that he turned down the chance to join Napoli in the January transfer window amid reports Liverpool want to sign the defensive midfielder.

The Malaga star has been attracting interest from the Premier League after a string of impressive performances for his employers in La Liga this season.

The 24-year-old, who was recently called up to the Spain squad, has scored two goals and has made one assist in 21 appearances in the Spanish top-flight already this term.

Handing Liverpool a boost in their bid to sign the holding midfielder, Camacho unveiled Napoli’s failed move for the Malaga star, although he failed to rule out a potential exit in the future.

“There was an offer from Napoli but the club decided it was not the right time to sell me,” Camacho is quoted as saying by talkSPORT.

“I agreed with that and I’ve always said that if I do leave then I won’t do it by the back door. The club has given me a lot and vice versa, and there is a mutual respect. If I had to go then it would all be made very easy.”

Camacho joined Malaga from Atletico Madrid in 2010 after having helped Los Rojiblancos win the Uefa Europa League.
