Louis van Gaal has rubbished accusations that Manchester United humiliated Radamel Falcao by playing the striker in an Under-21s game earlier this week.

The Colombia international started against Tottenham’s Under-21 side after Falcao was an unused substitute in a 2-1 defeat by Arsenal in the FA Cup quarter-final.

Liverpool legends Jamie Carragher and Dietmar Hamann were quick to blast Van Gaal’s disgraceful treatment of the 29-year-old striker, who moved to Old Trafford on loan from Monaco last summer.

However, the 63-year-old Dutch coach insisted that the 20-time English champions made a professional decision, adding that Falcao handled the situation in a mature manner.

“I have read it was a humiliation,” Van Gaal told his pre-match media conference ahead of the visit of Tottenham on Sunday.

“I do not think so. It is a professional attitude of the manager, the management, also the club and especially from the player.

“It is not only Falcao. Valdes and Rafael have also played. He has not reacted how the media say he has reacted.”

The 29-year-old arrived at Old Trafford on loan from Monaco last summer with a reputation as one of Europe’s top strikers.

However, he has only managed to score four goals in the Premier League and has not found the net since the 3-1 win over Leicester back in January.

Asked if Falcao was likely to recover his best form, Van Gaal added: “Sometimes players can give fantastic performances in one country but not in another. It would not be the first time and it won’t be the last.”
