Wayne Rooney took to social media on Monday afternoon to thank his fans for their support after the Manchester United captain surpassed two million followers on Instagram.

The England skipper has been a regular poster on the photo-sharing app since opening his account back in March 2014, posting 175 pictures and videos.

And the 29-year-old striker paid tribute to his supporters by uploading the special picture above onto his account on Monday, and offering a competition to celebrate.

Rooney wrote: “I’ve reached 2 million followers! I’m giving away a signed England shirt to say thanks for all your support. To have a chance of winning just like this post and send me your favourite @england image using the hashtag #WR10 . I’ll pick my favourite and post it next week!”

Rooney has been in fine form for Manchester United so far this season. He has scored 11 goals and made four assists in the Premier League to help Louis van Gaal’s side mount a challenge for a top-four finish.

Rooney will be expecting to feature when United host Aston Villa in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Devils are currently fourth in the Premier League table, a point behind third-placed Arsenal heading into the final eight games of the season.
