Mesut Ozil took to social media to admit that Arsenal’s Champions League exit at the hands of Monaco on Tuesday night was a bitter pill to swallow.

Trailing 3-1 from last month’s first leg at Emirates Stadium, Olivier Giroud gave the north London side hope of a famous comeback when he finished high into the net in the 36th minute at Stade Louis II.

Substitute Aaron Ramsey then drilled home from inside the box in the 79th minute but Arsenal were unable to find the crucial third goal.

The 3-3 aggregate draw sent the Ligue 1 side through to the last eight on away goals as Arsenal were knocked out at the last 16 stage for the fifth successive year.

And Ozil, who played the full 90 minutes but was unable to help Arsenal make it a truly unforgettable Champions League night, was inconsolable after the final whistle.

Arsenal return to Premier League action against Newcastle this weekend.
