Tim Krul Quiet first half. Stunning double save in the second to deny Fellani from eight yards before getting back to his feet to keep out Young’s effort out. Shocking error for United’s goal. 6/10

Daryl Janmaat Quality signing and solid at the back. The Dutchman never really lost possession and had a comfortable evening. 5

Mike Williamson Forming a good partnership with Coloccini and between them kept Rooney fairly quiet. 6

Fabricio Coloccini Solid at the back. Always there with last-ditch tackles. 6

Ryan Taylor Fairly quiet game, not really tested. 5

Gabriel Obertan – Former United player failed to inspire his team. Lacked quality and creativity. 4

Mehdi Abeid The 22-year-old Frenchman held his own in the middle of the park and occasionally got involved in the Magpies’ attacks. 6

Moussa Sissoko Combative and strong in the middle of the park, kept United midfield at bay. 6

Sammy Ameobi Tireless performance but lacked the cutting edge to cut open the United defence. 5

Emmanuel Riviere Great opportunity just before the break to net his first goal for the Magpies but completely made a mess of the chance. Even better chance on 46 minutes but squandered. 6

Papiss Cisse Quiet game for the Senagalese striker but lucky to stay on the pitch after spitting at Evans. Wasted a glorious two-on-one chance to blast Newcastle ahead. 5

Ayoze Perez Partnered Cisse up front however didn’t get into the game. 5

Jonas Gutierrez Will be happy with his comeback performance. Could be the spark Newcastle is missing. 5

David De Gea (man of the match) Made a great point-blank save from Riviere very early in the second half to keep United in the game. Pulled off a match-winning save in the dying moments to secure all three points for United. 8

Antonio Valencia Settled at right-back and ventured forward to assist providing width and pace. 6

Chris Smalling A few jittery moments in the game but helped out by his defensive partner. 5

Jonny Evans Involved in a spitting incident with Cisse which may cost the defender a ban. 5

Marcos Rojo Lucky escape for the Argentinian, who should have conceded a penalty. Booked for a reckless tackle. 5

Andres Herrera Beginning to find his feet in the premier league. Becoming more and more involved in games as he breaks up play. 6

Daley Blind Partnered Herrera in the middle and filled in where required. 5

Angel di Maria Former Real Madrid star is struggling to find his form. Another frustrating evening for the Argentinian. 4

Maraoune Fellaini More of a target man lately for the Red Devils. 5

Ashley Young Provided plenty of threat to the Newcastle defence with his pace and attacking skills. In the right place at the right time but missed a golden chance. Scored his first goal in over six months. 6

Wayne Rooney Played as the lone striker. Had a great chance to score from close range on 24 minutes from a through ball by Young but shot narrowly wide. Gave his all but lacked quality service. 6
