Paul Merson has appeared to cool talk of Arsenal challenging for the Premier League title next season.

The Gunners have already been talked up as potential challengers to Chelsea this season after the Gunners moved to within seven points of Jose Mourinho’s side, who have played a game less in the Premier League.

Arsene Wenger’s men have won their last five Premier League games since their north London derby defeat, whilst the Gunners have won their last nine games in the top-flight at Emirates Stadium.

However, Arsenal legend Merson is refusing to get carried away with Arsenal’s current form, highlighting their disastrous first-leg performance against Monaco in the Champions League last month.

“This is Arsenal all over at the moment, they will win their last nine league games of the season and then there will be huge optimism around the club that they can go and win next season’s Premier League,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“Yes they have been in impressive form of late, but they still lost that one crucial game at home to what was a poor Monaco side in the Champions League.”

Despite playing down talk of a Premier League title bid next season, Merson backed the Gunners to make light work of Newcastle United on Saturday.

Merson continued: “Newcastle will be without their captain Fabricio Coloccini through suspension, and I think he will be a huge miss and even though they will be playing in front of 50,000 fans at St James’, Arsenal have a great record there and I expect an easy win for Arsene Wenger’s side.”

Arsenal are unbeaten in their last six visits to St James’ Park in all competitions.
