Philippe Coutinho gave Liverpool’s top-four hopes a boost after the midfielder scored a second-half strike to seal a 2-1 victory over Manchester City at Anfield.

Edin Dzeko cancelled out Jordan Henderson’s long-range opener in the 25th minute, before the Brazil international scored the winner in successive games against the Citizens at Anfield with 15 minutes remaining.

Here is a selection of our favourite Twitter reaction from the professionals, past and present, from a pulsating clash on Merseyside on Sunday afternoon.

Spurs legend Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) likens the stand-in Liverpool captain’s opener to a Steven Gerrard strike: “Absolutely stunning goal from Henderson. Gerrardesque…”

QPR midfielder Joey Barton (@Joey7Barton) is having to back track on some tweets that he sent out a couple of weeks ago: “What a strike that is from Henderson. Maybe he is the new Gerrard?”

Former Liverpool striker Neil Mellor (@NeilMellor33) appears to prefer bins rather than drawers: “What a finish from the captain! Top bin! Not stopping that! Henderson 1-0!”

Arsenal legend Ian Wright (@IanWright0 ) is just in awe of a buzzing atmosphere at Anfield: “What a great atmosphere at anfield!!!”

City legend Rodney Marsh (@RodneyMarsh10) lands a sly dig on Liverpool after Dzeko levels the game: “Big team equalizes 1-1 Dzeko”

Everton legend Peter Reid (@reid6peter) heaps praise on Sergio Aguero for his role in the equaliser: “How good is Aguero ?”

Even Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier (@mattletiss7) salutes Coutinho after his brilliant strike: “Wow 2 in a week for coutinho”

Liverpool cult hero Luis Garcia (@LuchoGarcia14) can’t quite believe Coutinho has scored another world-class strike: “yeeeees What a goal again!!! @Phil_Coutinho [email protected] 2 vs Manchester City 1”

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Pepe Reina (@PReina25) names Coutinho as his Liverpool player of the season – and who are we to argue? “@Phil_Coutinho 100% Player of the Season for @LFC so far… Wow!!#LFCvMCFC”

Injured Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva (@LucasLeiva87) celebrates Coutinho’s winner: “Ole ole ole coutinhooooooooo coutinhooooo”
