With the aggregate score level at 1-1 from the last-16 first leg last month, PSG’s task became harder when Zlatan Ibrahimovic was sent off for a challenge on Oscar in the 31st minute.
The Blues took the lead when Gary Cahill fired home from close range in the 81st minute, but David Luiz headed home from a corner three minutes later to force extra-time.
Eden Hazard gave the Blues the lead again from the penalty spot after Thiago Silva’s handball, but the Brazilian made amends by heading in from a corner in the 114th minute to send PSG through on away goals after a 3-3 draw on aggregate.
Wednesday’s game prompted plenty of activity on Twitter – and here are some of our favourite updates.
Michael Owen (@themichaelowen) accepts that PSG were worthy winners: “Hurts to say it but the best team went through. More questions will be asked about the state of the English game.”
Wayne Rooney (@WayneRooney) was thoroughly impressed by the visitors: “That is one of the best performances I’ve ever seen with 10 men from psg”
Louis Saha (@louissaha08) was impressed by a mature display: “#PSG has grown up tonight!!!!! #PSG has matured and has learned so fast and basically was better with only 10 huge players. Well done!!!!!”
John Aldridge (@Realaldo474) analyses the result: “Chelsea simply got what they deserved. The way they played portrayed their manager.Negativity at home, rarely works.”
Alan Smith (@9smudge) sticks up for the Blues: “Don’t agree Chelsea are ‘a million miles away’ in Europe, just very poor tonight. Can City or Arsenal now save English blushes?”
Mark Bright (@Mark__Bright) adds to the praise for the French side: “No one can argue that PSG were technically better, passed it better, created more and played 90mins with ten men, Cfc ineffective at home.”
Jose Enrique (@Jesanchez3) is happy for Laurent Blanc’s men: “Yes #psg. Completely deserve the win.”
And that just leaves Gary Lineker (@GaryLineker) to have the final say: “Extraordinary performance from PSG. To play with 10 men for an hour and a half without their best player and overcome Chelsea is a triumph.”
