Brendan Rodgers reserved special praise for Simon Mignolet after Jordan Henderson’s second-half goal handed Liverpool a 1-0 victory at Swansea City on Monday night.

Swansea dominated proceedings early on at the Liberty Stadium and missed a number of chances to take the lead against the Merseyside outfit.

Mignolet produced some fine saves to deny Bafetimbi Gomis and Gylfi Sigurdsson, as Henderson’s 68th minute winner handed the Reds three points.

And Rodgers was gushing with praise for his goalkeeper after the final whistle.

“There’s no doubt Simon Mignolet’s back to his best,” Rodgers said, speaking to Sky Sports after the game. “We needed him in the first half. He’s been excellent.

“Clearly now, you see his confidence, along with the team’s.”

Monday’s win moved Liverpool to within two points of the Champions League places heading into the final nine games of the season.

But Rodgers admitted that his side were made to work hard for their victory after a sluggish start to the game in South Wales.

“I thought we were outstanding in the second half. In the first half we were nowhere near the level we expect,” he continued.

“In the first half the 3-4-3 didn’t work. We weren’t pressing enough, and when we got the ball, we gave it away too cheaply.

“We changed the structure in the second half by going to a diamond and pushing the sides forward, and we were a lot better.”

Liverpool’s next game is a home clash with top-four rivals Manchester United on Sunday afternoon.
