Neither Luke Shaw or Marcos Rojo are fit enough to start for Manchester United at Liverpool on Sunday, Louis van Gaal has said.

Both Shaw and Rojo missed last weekend’s 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford due to injury and although the pair’s condition has improved this week, Van Gaal said that he is unlikely to risk them for the clash at Anfield.

The United boss also confirmed that Robin van Persie remains sidelined but is making good progress in his recovery from an ankle injury.

“I don’t think they [Rojo and Shaw] are fit to play, but maybe on the bench. I have to see how they are,” Van Gaal told MUTV.

“[Van Persie] was today [Friday], for the first time, on the training pitch running, so he has made progression also.”

Van Gaal’s Red Devils are currently fourth in the Premier League table with nine games left to play, but are only two points behind second-placed Manchester City and one behind third-placed Arsenal.

Liverpool are in fine form domestically heading into Sunday’s clash on Merseyside, having won eight of their last 10 Premier League games. Liverpool are the only team left in the English top flight not to have lost a game in 2015.
