Louis van Gaal has insisted that Wayne Rooney does not suffer from a “mental block” when playing at Anfield as Manchester United gear up for Sunday’s showdown with Liverpool.

Rooney has only scored once at Liverpool’s home ground, and that was more than 10 years ago on his first appearance for the Red Devils at Anfield.

United head to Liverpool on Sunday looking for a victory to keep up their bid for a top-four finish this season.

And Van Gaal insists that he has no concerns about the England striker’s mental strength ahead of Sunday’s clash on Merseyside.

The Manchester United boss told a news conference on Friday: “I don’t think that Wayne has a [mental] block, he’s a very experienced player.

“He has played on all the grounds in the world, so I don’t think that he shall be influenced by the fans at the stadium, or something like that.

“It’s strange but it can be like this, and I hope I can change it with Wayne.”

Rooney was on target as Manchester United beat Liverpool 3-0 in the Premier League at Old Trafford back in December.

United are currently fourth in the table but just two points behind second-placed Manchester City heading into the final seven games of the season.
