Victor Valdes: Man United move was a surprise for me
Manchester United goalkeeper Victor Valdes is pleased to have the chance to play for Red Devils
Victor Valdes admits that his transfer to Manchester United in January came as a complete surprise to him.
The Spain international signed an 18-month deal with the Red Devils in the January transfer after he quit La Liga giants Barcelona at the end of last season.
I know very well what you feel when you play for a big club, so it is not a big change for me
The 33-year-old hasn’t played first-team football since the Spanish shot stopper injured his knee during a Barcelona game in March 2014.
However, the former Barca star is thrilled to have the chance to continue his career at a club as prestigious as United after his injury nightmare.
“I am very happy for this option in my career after my injury,” Valdes told United’s website.
“I never thought maybe I will be a player of Manchester United but the manager called me and gave me this option, so it was a surprise for me. I always say it’s great for my career to be a part of this club and part of this team and, maybe, I hope to win another important trophy here too.
“They are both massive clubs with a massive number of trophy wins and the number of fans around the world is so big. I think it’s the same when you play for one of the most important clubs in the world, Man United or Barcelona, you must win always.
“This is our expectation and our job every day – for us, for the club and for the fans. It’s not different for me. I know very well what you feel when you play for a big club, so it is not a big change for me.”
Valdes won six La Liga titles and three Champions League crowns during a distinguished
Barcelona career which started under Van Gaal in the early noughties.
United number one David De Gea, who is amongst the candidates for the PFA player of the year award, has been linked with a big-money move to Real Madrid in recent weeks.
