Xabi Alonso missed the chance to make an emotional return to Anfield this season after the midfielder joined Bayern Munich on the day that Real Madrid drew the Reds in the Champions League group-stage.

The World Cup winner made 210 appearances for the Merseyside outfit during a five-year career at Anfield before the 31-year-old completed a £30m move to Realm Madrid in the summer of 2009.

Liverpool, of course, lost 3-0 to the Champions League holders at Anfield before the Reds produced a more determined display at The Bernabeu, losing 1-0 to Los Blancos with a second-string side.

However, Alonso, who won the Champions League in Istanbul in 2005, has the chance to run out in front of the Kop in red once more on Sunday afternoon for Steven Gerrard’s charity match.

In a clip uploaded on Liverpool’s YouTube channel on Saturday morning, Alonso lifted the lid on the moment that he realised fate had conspired against him.

Alonso scored 19 goals during his Reds career, helping Liverpool to win the Champions League and FA Cup, as well as finish as runners-up to Manchester United in the Premier League in 2009.
