Ander Herrera heaps praise on Man United captain Wayne Rooney

Ander Herrera praises Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney for helping to galvanise him and his team-mates

Ander Herrera has described Wayne Rooney as Manchester United’s “biggest character” and says that the captain’s leadership skills are helping him improve as a player.

Rooney gave a speech to the United squad following the disappointment of their FA Cup exit at the hands of Arsenal last month, before the Red Devils sealed impressive wins over Tottenham and Liverpool in the Premier League.

And Herrera admits that Rooney’s words after the cup loss had a galvanising effect on him and his team-mates as Louis van Gaal’s men look to end the season by securing qualification for the Champions League.

Speaking to United Review, Herrera said: “It always has an impact. Wayne Rooney is our leader. He is maybe the strongest guy – not only physically, but also mentally.

“I think we in the squad are following him always. He is our captain, our leader and our [biggest] character. I think he shows very, very well what Manchester United is.”

United host Aston Villa at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon as they look for a win to keep their bid for a top-four finish on track.

Rooney missed a penalty as they sealed a 2-1 win over Liverpool at Anfield in their most recent top-flight outing.
