Andros Townsend tweets Arsenal legend after his England heroics
Andros Townsend reminds Paul Merson of his criticism of the winger's England call-up after his strike against Italy
Andros Townsend couldn’t resist aiming a gloating tweet in the direction of Paul Merson after the winger scored England’s equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Italy in Turin on Tuesday night.
The former Arsenal midfielder was critical of Roy Hodgson’s decision to include Tottenham midfielder Townsend in his 24-man squad for the games against Lithuania and Italy.
The Spurs man has struggled to secure a regular starting place under Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino this season, prompting Merson to question Townsend’s inclusion.
However, the former Queens Park Rangers man answered his critic in emphatic fashion with a brilliant strike to beat Gianluigi Buffon and ensure England remain unbeaten in 2015.
Taking to Twitter after the stalemate in Italy, Townsend made sure his followers and Merson were reminded of the former England international’s comments about him last week.

Hodgson’s side are six points clear at the top of Group E after a 4-0 victory over Lithuania at Wembley last week.
The Three Lions aren’t in action again until a friendly clash against the Republic of Ireland at Aviva Stadium.
