Arsenal 4 Liverpool 1: Arsene Wenger coy on talk of title challenge
Arsene Wenger insists that his Arsenal side will only take things game by game after their impressive 4-1 win over Liverpool
Arsene Wenger insisted that Arsenal are only focused on the next game after thrashing 10-man Liverpool 4-1 to move up to second place in the Premier League table.
Wenger’s men took the lead in the 37th minute when Hector Bellerin curled a left-footed shot low into the far post.
We need other teams to have a weakness and we cannot master that
Mesut Ozil then made it 2-0 with a sublime free-kick just two minutes later, before Alexis Sanchez drilled home on the stroke of half-time.
Jordan Henderson pulled a goal back from the penalty spot in the second half but Olivier Giroud’s stunning turn and shot added gloss to the scoreline after Emre Can was shown a second yellow card.
The result left Arsenal four points behind leaders Chelsea, who have two games in hand over the Gunners, but Wenger played down talk of a late title challenge after the game.
“We look up [at Chelsea] yes, but we look even more game by game,” Wenger told BT Sport.
“As I told you before the game, we need 100 per cent results and the only way to get that is to focus on the next one with everybody together.
“We need other teams to have a weakness and we cannot master that.”
The Frenchman was thrilled with his side’s all-round display against Brendan Rodgers’ men in north London.
“We were focused, clinical,” he said. “If you look at the table you will see the number of goals we have scored and it’s not a coincidence.
“The plan was not to let them play and as soon as we did you could see that they are a very good team going forward.”
Arsenal travel to Burnley in the Premier League next Saturday evening.
