Arsenal transfers: Wenger discusses Walcott contract situation
Arsene Wenger says Theo Walcott has a 'great future' and is confident forward will sign a new contract at Arsenal
Arsene Wenger insists that he is confident Theo Walcott will sign an extension to his contract at Arsenal.
The England international’s current deal is set to expire at the end of next season, and the 26-year-old has been heavily linked with a transfer to Liverpool in recent days.
He is only young and I believe he will have a great goal-scoring record
It has been suggested that Walcott could be included as part of a deal for Arsenal to sign Raheem Sterling from the Merseyside club.
However, Arsenal manager Wenger feels certain that Walcott will commit his long-term future to the north London club by putting pen to paper sooner rather than later.
Speaking at a news conference on Thursday morning, Wenger said: “I am confident because I believe Theo has a great future. He is just coming back from a difficult injury and every week he is getting better.
“He is only young and I believe he will have a great goal-scoring record in the future because of the quality and intelligence of his game. Therefore I want him to stay with our club.”
Walcott has found his first-team opportunities limited at Arsenal this season following his return from a lengthy lay-off with a knee injury.
He has scored two goals in eight Premier League games but has been limited to only three top-flight starts for Wenger’s side so far this season.
