Arsene Wenger: Why Hector Bellerin has surprised me at Arsenal

Arsene Wenger has been thrilled with Hector Bellerin's development at Arsenal this season

Arsene Wenger admits that he has been pleasantly surprised by Hector Bellerin’s development at Arsenal this season.

The 20-year-old Spaniard scored Arsenal’s opener with a well-taken left-footed shot as the Gunners secured a thumping 4-1 win over Liverpool at Emirates Stadium on Saturday.

Bellerin, who spent most of last season on loan to Watford, has made 10 Premier League starts for Wenger’s side this season following two serious injuries to first-choice right-back Mathieu Debuchy.

And Wenger was full of praise for the Spaniard after his eye-catching performance against the Merseyside outfit on Saturday, despite conceding a second-half penalty.

“He’s one of the surprises of the season,” Wenger said, speaking at his post-match news conference at Emirates Stadium.

“He was at Watford on loan last year and didn’t get the games. He’s just 20 years old, if you look at what he does at 20 years of age… He played against a great player today in Sterling in the second half.

“Maybe he still has some experience to gain but defending one against one is good and going forward is good as well.

“He scored an important goal in a big game and that always shows that the guy has the mental quality to be there.”

Saturday’s win lifted Arsenal up to second in the Premier League table and seven points behind leaders Chelsea after the Blues’ victory over Stoke City later on Saturday.

Arsenal are next in action when they travel to Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday.
