Arsene Wenger sings Alexis Sanchez’s praises after Arsenal beat Liverpool
Arsene Wenger praises Alexis Sanchez after the Chilean helps fire Arsenal to a 4-1 win over Liverpool
Arsene Wenger reserved special praise for Alexis Sanchez after the Chilean helped fire Arsenal to a thumping 4-1 win over Liverpool on Saturday.
The 26-year-old scored Arsenal’s third goal with a sublime finish as Wenger’s men ran riot in north London to move up to second place in the Premier League table.
And the Frenchman was full of praise for the forward after the game as he explained his decision to keep him on the pitch for the full 90 minutes instead of Mesut Ozil.
Speaking at his post-match news conference, Wenger said: “He worked very hard. He gave absolutely everything and had a great first half.
“Alexis is a guy who never gives up. He played two games with Chile, Ozil played two games with Germany and I could see that their legs had gone a little bit with 25 minutes to go.
“I had a decision to make between him or Ozil and I subbed Ozil because I felt he was in danger of being injured. Alexis did fight very hard until the end.”
Arsenal went ahead in the 37th minute in north London when Hector Bellerin curled a left-footed shot low into the far post.
Mesut Ozil then made it 2-0 with a sublime free-kick just two minutes later, before Sanchez drilled home on the stroke of half-time.
Jordan Henderson pulled a goal back from the penalty spot in the second half but Olivier Giroud’s stunning turn and shot added gloss to the scoreline after Emre Can was shown a second yellow card.
