Arsene Wenger tells Arsenal fans to respect Cesc Fabregas

Arsene Wenger wants Cesc Fabregas to be given a good reception by Arsenal fans at The Emirates on Sunday

Arsene Wenger has called on Arsenal fans not to give Cesc Fabregas a hostile reception when he returns to Emirates Stadium with Chelsea on Sunday.

The ex-Arsenal captain is set to line up against his former employers at their home ground for the first time since leaving the north London side to join Barcelona in 2011 after eight years at the club.

Speaking at his pre-match news conference on Thursday, Wenger insisted that Gunners fans should respect the 27-year-old Spaniard, despite his decision to join Chelsea from Barcelona last summer.

Wenger said: “I want every player to be respected, and Cesc Fabregas when he comes to the Emirates on Sunday to be respected like he deserves.

“The regret I have is that he wanted to leave here. This club and myself had a very positive influence on Cesc’s life, so I would be a bit uncomfortable to have to justify today why he is not here.

“I believe I would rather it was the other way around.”

The Spaniard joined Chelsea in a £27m deal last year and has been one of the Premier League’s top performing midfielders this season.

Fabregas has scored three goals and made 16 assists to help Chelsea build a 10-point lead at the top of the Premier League table heading into Sunday’s clash with Arsenal at Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal are second in the table heading into Sunday’s game.
