Balotelli, Hamann and more: Twitter reacts as Liverpool ease past Newcastle

Mario Balotelli and Dietmar Hamann tweet their thoughts after Liverpool edge to a 2-1 victory over Newcastle

Liverpool moved to within four points of fourth-placed Manchester City after a 2-1 victory over Newcastle United at Anfield.

The Reds eased into a first-half lead courtesy of Raheem Sterling’s brilliant individual goal before Joe Allen instinctively finished past Tim Krul with 20 minutes remaining.

Moussa Sissoko was sent off after he picked up a second yellow card in the final stages, and here is a selection of the best Twitter reaction from the professional, past and present, in chronological order.

A cheeky opener from former Manchester United man Alan Tonge (@Alan_Tonge) after Sterling breaks the deadlock on Merseyside: “1-0 Liverpool. Sterling bongs….er I mean bangs one in the corner :-)”

Controversial Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli (@FinallyMario) is delighted for his team-mate: “Oh yeees Raheem! Come on!!!”

QPR midfielder Jermaine Jenas (@jjenas8) is in awe of Liverpool’s Brazilian magician: “Coutinho that was outrageous”

A former Magpie and Red Dietmar Hamann (@DietmarHamann¬) shows no favouritism after Dejan Lovren was fortunate not to concede a second-half penalty: “How did the ref miss that penalty for Newcastle?”

Some words of advice for Sterling from Mark Bright (@Mark__Bright) after the England international missed a second-half sitter: “Sign that contract now Sterling…..”

Meanwhile, Manchester City legend Rodney Marsh (@RodneyMarsh10) has a new nickname for Sterling: “Oh dear ££££££’s”

Finally, former Republic of Ireland international Clinton Morrison (@morrisonclinton) isn’t impressed with Sissoko’s challenge on Lucas Leiva: “That’s naughty that’s a leg break lucky Lucas is”
