Brendan Rodgers: Jordan Henderson ‘crucial’ to Liverpool
Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers praises Jordan Henderson's commitment after midfielder signed five-year deal
Brendan Rodgers says Jordan Henderson will have a crucial role to play at Liverpool in the coming seasons.
The 24-year-old signed a new five-year deal with the Reds on Thursday afternoon which will see the midfielder stay at Anfield until 2020.
He will have a crucial role to play as we look to take this side forward and look to add success to the progress we have made
Henderson, who was named as the club’s new vice-captain at the start of the season, has scored six goals and has made eight assists in 31 Premier League games this season.
Speaking to Liverpool’s website about one of his star players, Rodgers praised Henderson’s commitment and hunger to learn.
“Jordan is a brilliant professional and his dedication to his career and football in general makes him a role model to all young players.
“He has faced adversity in his time at Liverpool, but his improvement, growth and development is entirely down to his own hunger, commitment and willingness to learn and be better.
“The fact he has made such a long-term commitment to Liverpool is a sign of his belief in what we are looking to do here. He will have a crucial role to play as we look to take this side forward and look to add success to the progress we have made.
“I am very excited about our future and what this group can achieve together; today’s announcement is another important positive step forward.”
Henderson is one of the leading candidates to replace Steven Gerrard as the new Reds captain in the summer after the 34-year-old agreed a deal to join Major League Soccer outfit LA Galaxy.
The England midfielder, who was part of Roy Hodgson’s World Cup squad, last summer, has scored 20 goals in 180 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions since his £20m move to Anfield from the Stadium of Light.
