Chelsea 1 Man United 0: We had them in our pockets, says Jose Mourinho
Jose Mourinho praises his Chelsea side for nullifying Manchester United's key players in a narrow win
Jose Mourinho claimed that Chelsea had Manchester United “in their pockets” after a close-fought 1-0 victory at Stamford Bridge.
The west London side edged closer to a fourth Premier League title after PFA player of the year nominee Eden Hazard scored a first-half winner.
Nobody saw them. They were in our pockets
However, Louis van Gaal’s side enjoyed 70 per cent possession and registered 15 attempts on Thibaut Courtois’ goal in a positive performance.
But Chelsea boss Mourinho appeared to suggest that the result was never in doubt, praising his players for nullifying the threat of United’s big-name players.
“We need our points but if they come against teams in second or in third it helps us,” Mourinho told BBC Sport.
“Today we won three points and our direct opponent lost three points. We are focussed on us, we have six matches to play and we need eight points.
“The game was exactly the game we want. The only thing we couldn’t do was to kill the game with a second goal. We were able to make their important players disappear. Nobody saw them. They were in our pockets.”
Chelsea are 10 points clear of second-placed Arsenal after their 1-0 victory over Van Gaal’s men in west London.
And the Blues manager was willing to admit that the leaders are in a good position heading into their final six games of the season.
“Six games to play, three at home three away. Every game is difficult, every team needs points. But out situation is very good,” Mourinho added.
Chelsea make the trip across London to face Arsenal at Emirates Stadium on 26 April.
