Jamie Carragher: This is what Arsenal need in the transfer market

Jamie Carragher lists the positions that he feels Arsenal need to strengthen next season

Jamie Carragher believes that Arsenal are in need of a number of key signings this summer if they are to challenge for the Premier League title next season.

The north London side have been in fine form in recent weeks and are currently second in the Premier League table heading into Sunday’s clash with Chelsea at Emirates Stadium.

Arsene Wenger’s men have won their last eight Premier League games and sit 10 points behind Jose Mourinho’s leaders ahead of Sunday’s game.

However, despite the north London side’s recent fine form, Carragher feels that Arsenal are in need of significant reinforcements in a number of positions if they are to mount a serious title bid next season.

Carragher wrote in his column for the Daily Mail: “Laurent Koscielny has steadied things in defence, with Arsenal winning 15 of the 18 games he’s played since January 1 but, to progress, Wenger needs another top centre back. Gabriel Paulista arrived in the New Year but it seems it was to provide cover for Koscielny and Per Mertesacker.

“Francis Coquelin has added bite to the midfield, but would Arsenal have enough to challenge next season if Coquelin is their anchor and Mikel Arteta is his back up? No.

“Why doesn’t he go for Paul Pogba, who looks set to leave Juventus? Wenger spent £42m on Mesut Ozil, so why not spend the same and more on Pogba.

“If they needed to sign Ozil two years ago, their need to sign Pogba this summer is even greater. Diego Godin of Atletico Madrid is 29 and at the peak of his powers. He would be ideal at the heart of the defence.”

Arsenal are on course for a top-four finish and take on Aston Villa in next month’s FA Cup final at Wembley as they look to defend the trophy they won last season.
