Jamie Carragher: Why Angel di Maria won’t start Man United v Man City
Jamie Carragher does not believe that Angel di Maria will start Sunday's Manchester derby clash
Jamie Carragher believes that Angel di Maria is unlikely to start Sunday’s Manchester derby because Louis van Gaal won’t want to tinker with a winning team.
Di Maria was a second-half substitute as United ran out 3-1 winners over Aston Villa at Old Trafford last weekend.
The Argentina international has struggled to hold down a regular starting spot in United’s first-team since his big-money move to United from Real Madrid last summer.
And Carragher feels that Van Gaal is likely to stick with his most recent starting 11 for the visit of the defending champions on Sunday afternoon.
The former Liverpool defender told Sky Sports: “I don’t think he’ll start.
“Van Gaal shows that when he picks a team and wins he picks the same team again. I expected Di Maria to come back in against Liverpool, but they kept Juan Mata and he got the two goals.
“I think the form United are in at the moment he will keep the same team – he seems that type of coach. He has said that big personalities or the cost of a player does not matter, and at the moment the team is playing well, and I’m sure he’ll stick with it.”
Di Maria, 27, has scored three goals and made 10 assists in 22 Premier League games for Manchester United so far this season.
The Red Devils head into Sunday’s clash at Old Trafford in third place in the Premier League table and a point ahead of their local rivals.
