Jamie Carragher: Why summer signings are crucial for Liverpool
Jamie Carragher issues his backing for Brendan Rodgers and insists that Liverpool's transfer activity this summer is crucial
Jamie Carragher has issued his backing for Brendan Rodgers but admits that this summer’s transfer activity could make or break his Liverpool career.
The Reds saw their last hope of winning a trophy this season ended by Aston Villa as they were beaten 2-1 in last Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final at Wembley.
Rodgers’ side are currently seven points behind fourth-placed Manchester City heading into their final six games of the season.
Liverpool brought in seven new players following the departure of Luis Suarez to Barcelona last summer but the Reds have failed to mount a title challenge this season.
Former Liverpool defender Carragher is convinced that the Northern Irishman is still the right man to take the Merseyside outfit forward but says that the club must make sure they bring in the right players this summer.
Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ, Carragher said: “Is he the right man? I think so.
“Brendan, the players and the staff will be looking to next season and thinking they will go one step further, winning a trophy maybe and getting back into the top four.
“That’s his job. He has to identify where in the team they need to improve; the squad is there and they did a lot of that last summer.
“The signings have to be right and if they are it will make a massive difference. If they’re not they’ll be back to where they are this season.”
“I don’t think your whole future should be determined by one game. It was difficult with the players that came in and I still don’t think many of them have bedded in yet.
Liverpool return to Premier League action when they travel to West Bromwich Albion on Saturday afternoon.
