Jamie Redknapp: Why Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil is something special
Jamie Redknapp believes that Mesut Ozil deserves more praise after his big-money transfer to Arsenal
Jamie Redknapp has heaped praise on Mesut Ozil after the playmaker’s performance in Arsenal’s 4-1 win over Liverpool on Saturday.
The Germany international has come in for plenty of criticism since his £42.5m transfer to Arsenal from Real Madrid in the summer of 2013 for failing to produce consistent performances for Arsene Wenger’s men.
Ozil was in fine form as he score Arsenal’s second goal with a sublime free-kick as the north London side secured a thumping win to move up to second place in the Premier League.
And former Liverpool midfielder Redknapp believes that Ozil deserves more credit than he has been receiving since his switch to The Emirates.
Redknapp wrote in the Daily Mail: “There’s no doubt that Mesut Ozil is an easy target for ex-pros and pundits. But when he’s at his best he is worth paying to watch.
“I’d much rather see a quality player do something special than a bunch of grafters with nothing to show for it.
“Against Liverpool, Ozil was at his brilliant best in a massive game. You don’t become a Real Madrid hero or win the World Cup without being something special. Ozil is just that.
“When things don’t come off for the German, people are quick to criticise. We do that too much in this country — looking at what people can’t do rather than what they can — and it’s where we go wrong so often.”
Ozil, 26, has scored four goals and made five assists in 15 Premier League games for Arsenal so far this season.
The Gunners are next in action when they travel to Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
