Jens Lehmann challenges Mesut Ozil to step up for Arsenal
Jens Lehmann believes that Mesut Ozil needs to improve his performances in the big games for Arsenal
Jens Lehmann has challenged Mesut Ozil to prove his worth to Arsenal by performing in the big games for Arsene Wenger’s men.
The Germany international has come in for some criticism for a perceived failure to live up to his £42.5m price-tag following his move to Emirates Stadium from Real Madrid in the summer of 2013.
Ozil has been in good form for the north London side since the turn of the year, however, and has scored four goals and made five assists in the Premier League so far this season.
But former Arsenal goalkeeper Lehmann wants to see more from the World Cup winner when Arsenal take on their closest rivals.
“Arsenal bought him to win championships nationally and internationally. That should be his goal,” Lehmann is quoted as saying by FourFourTwo.
“He can’t do that on his own but he should be the one making the difference in big games. He’s got the potential but has to show it.”
Ozil will be expecting to feature when Arsenal take on Reading in the semi-finals of the FA Cup at Wembley on Saturday.
The Gunners then take on Chelsea in the Premier League at Emirates Stadium on 26 April.
