Jose Mourinho defends Chelsea’s Cesc Fabregas after criticism
Jose Mourinho defends Cesc Fabregas despite the Chelsea midfielder's apparent drop in form in recent weeks
Jose Mourinho has defended Cesc Fabregas following the recent criticism of the Chelsea playmaker, insisting that the Spaniard has been playing “wonderfully” of late.
The former Arsenal captain notched up 15 assists in his first 21 league appearances for the Blues since his summer transfer from Barcelona but has only managed one in his last 13 games in all competitions.
However, Mourinho insists that he is not concerned by the 27-year-old’s apparent dip in form and says he has been pleased by the midfielder’s recent performances.
“When some people write that Fabregas has dropped his level because the number of assists are not the same, the number of assists are probably not the same because the player that he assists doesn’t score,” Mourinho told reporters after Saturday’s 2-1 win over Stoke City at Stamford Bridge.
“I think he’s playing wonderfully well for us. I’ve never had doubts about his importance for us in the team”.
Saturday’s win over Stoke moved Chelsea seven points clear at the top of the Premier League table as the Blues took a big step towards their first Premier League title since 2010.
Chelsea, who have won seven of their last 10 top-flight games, travel to Queens Park Rangers in their next Premier League game on Sunday afternoon.
