Juan Mata: Man United’s Ander Herrera is a genius

Juan Mata hails Ander Herrera as a 'genius' after Spaniard inspires Manchester United to victory over Aston Villa

Juan Mata has described Ander Herrera as a “genius” after the Spaniard’s two goals helped fire Manchester United to a 3-1 win over Aston Villa on Saturday.

The midfielder, who joined United from Athletic Bilbao last summer, netted twice as Louis van Gaal’s men beat the Villains to keep their bid for Champions League qualification on track.

And Mata was full of praise for his compatriot as Manchester United now turn their attentions towards next weekend’s derby clash with local rivals City.

Mata wrote in his blog: “Three great goals I’d say. Wayne’s goal was spectacular, really nice to watch; not many players can score a goal like that.

“And two more goals from Ander. I think this is the first time he scores twice in a game and I’m very happy for him!

“The truth is he deserves it. He is a genius on and off the pitch and I know how happy he was after the game.”

Herrera has scored five goals and made four assists in 19 Premier League games for the Red Devils so far this season.

Saturday’s win over Villa left United third in the Premier League table and eight points behind leaders Chelsea heading into the final seven games of the season.

United have won 18 of their 31 top-flight games so far this season, and eight of their last 10 Premier League outings.
