Juan Mata: Why I’ve clicked with Ander Herrera at Man United

Juan Mata discusses why he feels he has such a good understanding with Ander Herrera at Manchester United

Juan Mata has lifted the lid on why he feels that he has linked up so well with Ander Herrera at Manchester United this season.

The Spanish duo have been in fine form for Louis van Gaal’s men so far this term and have scored four goals between them in United’s last two games.

United have also only lost one of the eight games in which the pair have started together following Herrera’s transfer to Old Trafford from Athletic Bilbao last summer.

Mata and Herrera played together for many years at youth level for Spain.

And Mata believes that their understanding is due to the pair having a connection both on and off the pitch.

“I think it’s because of the relationship we’ve had over the years and because we understand football and life in more or less the same way,” Mata told MUTV.

“I think we play well together because we understand each other and sometimes without speaking or looking we know where we’re going to pass or where we’re going to move on the pitch.

“The first goal at Anfield is a good example of that – he controlled the ball, turned and knew where I was already running to and he put the ball there. Ander is a quality player and I’m very happy he’s here and playing and performing well.”

The pair will be hoping to feature when United host local rivals Manchester City at Old Trafford on Sunday in their next Premier League game. The Red Devils are currently third in the top-flight table.
