Klopp perfect for Arsenal but Wenger needs time, says ex-Gunner

Arsenal legend Nigel Winterburn discusses talk of Jurgen Klopp taking over at Emirates Stadium

Jurgen Klopp would be a perfect appointment for Arsenal but Arsene Wenger deserves two more years, according to Nigel Winterburn.

The charismatic German coach is available at the end of the season after the 47-year-old confirmed that he will be leaving his post at Borussia Dortmund after five years in the summer.

Wenger was coming under severe pressure, so I understand where it’s coming from but I would be surprised if there was a change this summer

Wenger is on the brink of back-to-back FA Cup triumphs, whilst the Gunners are in second place in the Premier League table, albeit 10 points behind the runaway leaders Chelsea.

Whilst Winterburn would welcome Klopp at Emirates Stadium, the former Arsenal defender doesn’t envisage Wenger stepping aside for the Bundesliga winner at the end of the campaign.

“My thoughts are quite clear, and that’s why I talk about the next three years,” Winterburn told Goal.com.

“This year we’ve just had, in terms of the spending power and the players coming in, and the next two, where we’ll see the vision of where Arsenal are going to go and where they’ll be after that.

“I would like Arsene Wenger to see out the next two years, and see where we are then, but obviously, with Klopp leaving Dortmund, it sort of puts the conundrum in because he’s been linked with Arsenal before, particularly when Arsenal were struggling. Wenger was coming under severe pressure, so I understand where it’s coming from but I would be surprised if there was a change this summer.”

Arsenal edged into the FA Cup final on Saturday after a 2-1 extra-time victory over Championship outfit Reading.

The Gunners welcome the leaders to The Emirates on Sunday as Wenger’s side look to cut Chelsea’s advantage to seven points.
