Liverpool transfers: Real Madrid interest in Raheem Sterling confirmed
Zinedine Zidane says Real Madrid are keeping tabs on Raheem Sterling's contract situation at Liverpool
Real Madrid are keeping tabs on Raheem Sterling’s situation at Liverpool, Zinedine Zidane has revealed.
Zidane, who manages Madrid’s Castilla B-Team, has confirmed that the La Liga giants are keeping a close eye on the 20-year-old as he continues to stall over a new contract at the Anfield club.
Sterling has rejected Liverpool’s latest offer of a £100,000-a-week extension to his current deal, which expires in the summer of 2017.
And Zidane says that Real Madrid are monitoring Sterling’s situation, as they do with a host of Europe’s top talents.
“We know who Raheem Sterling is, and of course we are monitoring him as a player,” Zidane is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail.
“There are very few players in the world who can improve the Real Madrid squad, so it is going to make sense we monitor the progress of the best young players in the world.
“We monitored [Gareth] Bale for over a year, the same with Isco and also [Raphael] Varane.
“We monitor many of the best young players in Europe, then if we feel they have something to offer Real Madrid we will contact their club and try and make the next step.”
Sterling played the full 90 minutes as Liverpool slumped to a 4-1 defeat by Arsenal at Emirates Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The England international has scores six goals and made seven assists in 29 Premier League games for Brendan Rodgers’ men so far this term.
Liverpool take on Blackburn Rovers in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup on Wednesday evening.
