Liverpool transfers: Rodgers hints at marquee summer signings

Brendan Rodgers is confident that he will be backed by Liverpool's owners during the summer transfer window

Brendan Rodgers insists that he is confident that Liverpool’s owners will provide the necessary resources to make marquee signings this summer.

The Reds slumped to a disappointing 1-0 defeat by Hull City on Tuesday night as they suffered a huge blow to their hopes of qualifying for next season’s Champions League.

That loss left Rodgers’ men fifth in the Premier League table and seven points behind fourth-placed Manchester United heading into the final four games of the season.

And the Northern Irishman conceded that his current squad was not good enough to earn a place in Europe’s elite club competition.

Speaking in his post-match news conference on Tuesday night, Rodgers said: “You can’t hide the fact we’ve lost over 50 goals.

“Even with those players we weren’t tipped to get in the top four and we haven’t got those players now. We have to work with what we’ve got.

“Now we have to look to improve the squad and it’s always great if you can get marquee players to come in and help you. The owners will support that.

“Everyday you come into work at Liverpool you are working for your future.”

Rodgers admits that he has some rebuilding work to do this summer.

“I need to build a team that can get through the rough waters as well,” he continued. “We need a team that can get through the smooth and the rough.

“That will be my challenge – to rebuild a group that can get through the rough waters.”

Liverpool host Queens Park Rangers at Anfield next weekend as they look to return to winning ways. They then take on leaders Chelsea, before clashes with Crystal Palace and Stoke City.
