Liverpool’s Brendan Rodgers isn’t safe, says ex-Man United man
Johnny Giles says he wouldn't be surprised to see Brendan Rodgers sacked at the end of the season
Johnny Giles says he wouldn’t be surprised if Liverpool sacked Brendan Rodgers after a very, very disappointing season.
The Reds are seven points behind fourth-placed Manchester City ahead of their trip to West Bromwich Albion on Saturday afternoon.
Liverpool are set to finish the season without silverware for a third consecutive season under 42-year-old Northern Irishman.
Former Leeds United and Manchester United midfielder Giles reckons Rodgers’ position could be underthreat in light of Jurgen Klopp’s availability.
“I don’t think Brendan Rodgers is particularly safe,” Giles told Newstalk.com.
“It has been a very, very disappointing season for them after last season. Owners are always looking for the big saviour and Liverpool are no exception. If Rodgers did go, I wouldn’t be shocked about it.”
Giles added: “He has done a lot of strange things. He dropped four or five players for the Real Madrid game but said he wasn’t dropping them and it was his best team.”
Rodgers guided the 18-time English champions to a second-place finish before Luis Suarez quit Anfield for Barcelona in a £75m deal last July.
The Liverpool manager spent over £110m on new signings last summer, including £16m flop Mario Balotelli and £25m defender Dejan Lovren.
Klopp is being linked with a move to the Premier League after the charismatic German manager announced that he will leave Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season.
