Van Gaal delivers latest Man United injury update ahead of Man City test
Robin van Persie will not be fit for Sunday's Manchester derby, Louis van Gaal confirms
Robin van Persie has been ruled out of Sunday’s Manchester derby as the striker continues to work towards regaining full fitness, Louis van Gaal has revealed.
The Netherlands international has not featured for the Red Devils since suffering an ankle injury during the loss at Swansea City back on 21 February.
Van Persie returned to full training with the United first-team this week but Van Gaal confirmed that he will not be calling on the striker this weekend.
Van Gaal told MUTV: “No [Van Persie is not ready]. He’s back in training sessions so that is a plus. He trained two days with us and, today, he had recovery. So I think that is not enough to play.”
The Manchester United boss, whose side are currently third in the Premier League table and a point ahead of local rivals City, also delivered updates on defenders Luke Shaw and Chris Smalling.
“We have to wait and see always [on Smalling and Shaw],” he added. “I don’t think Shaw [will play] but I do think Smalling can play.”
United are in good form in the Premier League after having won eight of their last 10 top-flight games as they continue their push for Champions League qualification.
Sergio Aguero scored the only goal of the game when the two sides last met back in November.
