Man United 3 Aston Villa 1: Ander Herrera issues top-four rallying cry
Ander Herrera warns Manchester United that they must keep up their good form in the race for a top-four finish
Ander Herrera warned Manchester United that they are still in for a fight in their quest to qualify for next season’s Champions League after the Spaniard helped the Red Devils seal a 3-1 win over Aston Villa on Saturday.
Herrera gave United the lead on the stroke of half-time at Old Trafford with a low shot after good work from Daley Blind.
Wayne Rooney then made it 2-0 in the 79th minute when he fired into the top corner.
Christian Benteke pulled one back for Tim Sherwood’s visitors with a low strike – but Herrera sealed the victory with a side-footed finish in stoppage time.
The win lifted Manchester United up to third place in the Premier League table, but Herrera has warned his team-mates that the race for Champions League qualification is far from over.
Speaking to BBC Sport after Saturday’s win, Herrera said: “The battle for the top four is going to be very tough but we are on the right road.
“We are in very good form but have to play seven more games and have to fight a lot.”
He added: “Scoring goals was one of the things that I had to improve on. I’m getting better but have to improve still.”
United’s next game is a home clash with Manchester City next Sunday.
