Man United 3 Aston Villa 1: Van Gaal warns Red Devils over ‘rat race’
Louis van Gaal says that qualification for next season's Champions League is still not certain for Manchester United
Louis van Gaal has warned his Manchester United side that qualification for next season’s Champions League is far from secure, despite Saturday’s 3-1 win over Aston Villa at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils moved up to third place in the Premier League table with seven games left to play after the victory, with fifth-placed Liverpool now eight points behind Van Gaal’s men.
And United boss Van Gaal told BBC Sport: : “We are still not certain about Champions League qualification – it is still a rat race.
“But we have given a blow to Liverpool and Southampton also lost. It is a big gap. now we have to wait to see if the gap is too big for Tottenham too.
“But we have to play the top three – it is still a rat race.”
Spaniard Ander Herrera gave United the lead on the stroke of half-time at Old Trafford with a low shot after good work from Daley Blind.
Captain Wayne Rooney then made it 2-0 in the 79th minute when he fired into the top corner.
Villa’s Christian Benteke pulled one back for Tim Sherwood’s visitors with a low strike – but Herrera sealed the victory with a side-footed finish in stoppage time.
United’s next game is a home clash with local rivals Manchester City next Sunday.
