Man United 4 Man City 2: Player ratings as Ashley Young sparkles

Player ratings as Manchester United thrash Manchester City 4-2 to keep up their fine form

Manchester United

David De Gea Almost played like a sweeper, clearing up anything that broke through United’s backline. Faultless for both goals. 7/10

Daley Blind Linked up well with Young down the left channel. 7

Chris Smalling Appeared nervous early on but grew as the game went on and got on the score sheet for United’s fourth. 7

Phil Jones After a dodgy start, raised his game in the second half. 6

Antonio Valencia
Brilliant defensively and during the attacks. 7

Michael Carrick Tidy and composed on the ball as ever. 7

Marouane Fellaini Scapegoat one year, conqueror the next. Fellaini has become a focal point of United’s attacks and that was personified by his performance today. He thumped home a header from close range and was a constant aerial threat. Received a standing ovation as he was substituted. 9

Ander Herrera Continued his recent good form by providing Ashley Young with a sublime cross to start United’s comeback. 8

Juan Mata Was fluid and clear-cut in his link-up play from midfield to attack and was rewarded with a fine finish to catch City on the break. 8

Ashley Young (man of the match) An excellent performance from the wide man. Started the United comeback firstly by finishing from close range before aiding United with some sublime crossing which was second to none. 9

Wayne Rooney Led the team well from the front and combined well with the midfield. Slipped through a fine pass to assist Mata’s goal. 7

Manchester City

Joe Hart Was let down by his defence and was not at fault for any of the goals. 6

Pablo Zabaleta With all of the goals conceded coming down United’s left, the veteran defender struggled with bombardment that came from the likes of Blind, Fellaini and Young. Did assist Aguero for City’s second. 5

Vincent Kompany Was lucky to have not been sent off after a sinful high challenge on Daley Blind. Substituted at half time due to injury. 5

Martin Demichelis Lost possession too easily up field, exposing the City back line leading to United’s third goal. 5

Gael Clichy Rarely got forward and was well marshalled by Antonio Valencia. 5

Jesus Navas Never a serious threat on the wing due to United’s control down the channels. 5

Yaya Toure Looked a shadow of the player from last season. Was too slow to react to United’s midfield and failed to provide any cover to the defence. 5

Fernandinho Was quite frankly anonymous throughout the game. 4

James Milner The only positive spark in the few City attacks. Unfortunately had to go off due to injury. 6

David Silva Great run to find space in behind the United back line to slip in a pass to Aguero for an easy tap in. Grew less and less effective as United took control in midfield. 6

Sergio Aguero Tapped in a simple finish to give City a deserved early lead and got a second late on but the game had already been lost. 7

Substitutes

Eliaquim Mangala Came on at half time, replacing the injured Kompany. Played Chris Smalling onside for the fourth goal and didn’t look comfortable along side Demichelis. 5

Samir Nasri Replaced James Milner on the hour mark and didn’t affect the game. 5
