Man United captain Rooney heaps praise on Everton star
Wayne Rooney praises Ross Barkley after the Everton midfielder's impressive substitute display for England against Italy
Wayne Rooney reserved special praise for Ross Barkley after the duo helped England salvage a 1-1 draw in Tuesday night’s friendly with Italy.
Substitute Andros Townsend scored a late equaliser for Roy Hodgson’s men in Turin after Graziano Pelle’s first-half header put the Azzurri ahead.
Barkley replaced Theo Walcott in the 55th minute during the friendly and made a number of attacking runs as the Three Lions improved following a disappointing first-half display.
And Rooney, who began his career at Everton before joining Manchester United, was full of praise for the impact the 21-year-old had for England and is backing Barkley to enjoy a positive end to the season with Everton.
Rooney is quoted as saying by the Daily Mail: “Ross is a terrific player.
“He is a terrific young player and I think he can have an impact when he comes on.
“He did that, he took the ball, he ran at the Italian defenders and made it difficult for them.”
Barkley has been limited to 15 Premier League starts for Everton so far this season. He has scored two goals and made one assist in a total of 21 top-flight games for the Merseyside outfit.
