Man United have work to do to catch Chelsea, says Johnny Giles
Johnny Giles feels Chelsea are still clearly the best side in the league despite Manchester United's recent run
Manchester United still have work to do to close the gap on Chelsea, according to Johnny Giles.
The Red Devils saw their six-game winning run come to an abrupt end last weekend after Chelsea edged to a 1-0 victory over Louis van Gaal’s side at Stamford Bridge.
United are already been touted as Premier League title challengers next season after their impressive end to the season under the Dutchman.
Speaking to Newstalk’s Off The Ball show, the former United midfielder reckons the Red Devils will need to invest in their squad to have any chance of catching Chelsea next season.
“It would depend on the signings that they make during the close season. But then again, Chelsea can improve as well,” Giles said.
“They’ve got a bit to catch up. It has been a long season for Manchester United. There have been a lot of changes.
“As we saw at the start of the season, Louis van Gaal was committed to three at the back. But they aren’t playing it now and haven’t played it for a few weeks. I think it was a waste of time. They were better off without it.
“Chelsea are the team to catch. It depends what signings Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal make.”
Van Gaal spent over £150m, on new acquisitions last summer, including British record £59.7m signing Angel di Maria.
The United manager is being linked with a move for Borussia Dortmund centre-half Mats Hummels as Van Gaal looks to bolster his defensive options.
The Red Devils have also been touted with a move for PSV Eindhoven forward Memphis Depay.
