Man United legend Edwin van der Sar hails ‘tremendous’ David De Gea
Manchester United legend Edwin van der Sar says David De Gea is vital to the Red Devils
David De Gea has become a massively important player for Manchester United, says Edwin van der Sar.
The United goalkeeper hasn’t missed a minute of the club’s Premier League campaign under Louis van Gaal this season.
The Spain international’s eye-catching performances have earned him PFA player and young player of the year nominations.
United legend Van der Sar, who won four Premier League titles and the Champions League during his Old Trafford career, heaped praise on De Gea.
“He’s had a tremendous year, made some very important saves and has been one of the strongholds of the team,” Van der Sar told United’s website.
“That’s good to see. Initially, in his first year, he had some difficulties but he has really achieved a lot. It’s not easy to come to a different country at a young age with a different language and different methods but he really showed his worth and has become massively important to the club.
“The fans really appreciate him.”
De Gea won the Premier League title in 2013 after the goalkeeper joined United in a £18m deal from Atletico Madrid in 2011.
The former Los Rojiblancos man has made 158 appearances for United during his four-year stay at the Manchester club.
The United goalkeeper is bidding to become the first goalkeeper to win the PFA player of the year award since England and Nottingham Forest legend Peter Shilton in 1978.
