Man United transfers: Louis van Gaal needs £150m, says Liverpool legend

Liverpool legend Steve McManaman doesn't believe Manchester United are close to a Premier League title bid

Louis van Gaal needs to spend £150m on new signings in the summer transfer window, according to Steve McManaman.

The Red Devils slumped to a surprise 3-0 defeat by Everton at Goodison Park on Sunday afternoon which has left Liverpool and Southampton with a glimmer of hope in the top-four race.

I expected them to play much better and be closer, as in they have never ever been anywhere near challenging for the title this year

Van Gaal has been heavily linked with a move for Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels, Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba and Paris Saint-Germain forward Edinson Cavani in recent weeks.

Speaking to Football Tonight, BT Sport’s football debate and news round-up show, former Liverpool midfielder McManaman reckons United have been fortunate that Liverpool and Spurs failed to perform against the top-four rivals in crunch games.

“I think they are miles away, £150m from winning the title,” McManaman said.

“I have been disappointed with the way they have played. I think the fact that they played so well against Liverpool and Tottenham has rescued them. I expected them to play much better and be closer, as in they have never ever been anywhere near challenging for the title this year.

“They have got a little bit closer at the end of the season as other teams have tailed off. So I expected them to be closer playing a better standard of football. To have no European football this year has helped them considerably.”

Van Gaal spent over £150m on signings last summer after he snapped up Netherlands international Daley Blind, World Cup runner-up Marcos Rojo, Athletic Bilbao star Ander Herrera and England left-back Luke Shaw.

The Dutchman also snapped up Angel di Maria in a British record £59.7m deal from Real Madrid, whilst two-time Europa League winner Radamel Falcao joined on a season-long loan from Ligue 1 side Monaco.
