Man United transfers: Memphis Depay should stay at PSV, says ex-Dutch star
Former Dutch star Johnny Rep tells Manchester United target Memphis Depay to stay at PSV for another season
Memphis Depay could struggle to secure first-team football at Manchester United, according to former Netherlands international Johnny Rep.
The Dutch star was crowned an Eredivisie champion on Saturday after the 21-year-old helped PSV claim the top-flight crown thanks to a 4-1 victory over Heerenveen.
Depay has played a key role in bringing back the Eredivisie trophy to Eindhoven after the winger scored 20 goals in 27 league games, prompting reports of interest from United.
However, former Ajax and Valencia star Rep warned Depay that he could face the same treatment as Colombia international Radamel Falcao, who has struggled at Old Trafford this term.
“The top clubs in Europe have such great squads,” Rep told De Telegraaf. “With competition like this, the chances are pretty high that you get little playing time.
“Just look at a striker in the form of Radamel Falcao at Manchester United. Depay has the ability to go far and I also believe that Van Gaal would let him play football. But it would be a shame if he ends up somewhere on the bench. So I advise him to stay for another year at PSV.”
Tottenham and Liverpool are among the other Premier League clubs linked with a move for the forward.
Depay became the youngest Dutchman to score a goal at a World Cup after the winger netted against Australia in the group stage last summer.
The PSV youngster, who was named on the three-man shortlist for the World Cup’s best young player award, came off the bench to score against Chile in Holland’s final group-stage fixture.
