Man United transfers: Ron Vlaar hints at Aston Villa stay
Manchester United target Ron Vlaar could stay at Aston Villa beyond the end of the season
Ron Vlaar says he could stay at Aston Villa beyond the summer transfer window despite reported interest from Manchester United.
The Netherlands international has been touted as a target for the Red Devils in recent months as Louis van Gaal looks to bolster his defensive options at Old Trafford.
The 20-year-old is set to become a free agent at the end of the season unless the centre-half can agree a new deal with the Birmingham side.
And Vlaar hinted that the recent appointment of Tim Sherwood as Villa manager could see the defender extend his stay at the FA Cup finalists.
“It is [possible I could stay]. Things have changed for me in the past few months since Sherwood took over,” Vlaar is quoted as saying by Goal.com.
“It’s been a hard season for me with all the injuries. Now I just want to play and be important for the team. Reaching the final helps – you can trust me on that.
“It [moving clubs] is not something to think about right now. Things have changed at the club. It wasn’t so good earlier in the year but that’s football. Things change. A new manager came in … it was a new start.
“We started to play better, the results got better. And the only thing that gives you confidence is winning games, so this win will give us another massive boost. The team spirit is really good.”
Vlaar played 90 minutes of their 2-1 victory over Liverpool in their FA Cup semi-final at Wembley on Sunday evening.
The Villa defender has made 15 appearances in all competitions this season, racking up 1,197 minutes of first-team action.
Sherwood’s side are four points clear of the relegation zone with six Premier League games remaining.
