Man United transfers: Southampton chief gives Nathaniel Clyne update
Southampton chief Les Reed is confident Man United target Nathaniel Clyne will sign a new deal despite transfer speculation
Les Reed says Southampton are confident that Manchester United target Nathaniel Clyne will sign a new deal with the club.
The England international has been heavily linked with a move to the 20-time English champions in recent months after an impressive season for the south coast club.
I’d be very surprised if there wasn’t speculation about him, but at the moment the signs are good
Clyne has scored two goals in 32 Premier League appearances, racking up 2,787 minutes of top-flight action for the Saints, who have the division’s meanest defence.
Southampton lost Adam Lallana, Luke Shaw, Dejan Lovren and Calum Chambers to their top-four rivals last year, but Southampton head of development Reed is confident Clyne will commit to the club.
“We’re in constant communication,“ Reed told talkSPORT.
“These contract negotiations are never just one meeting, where everything is done and sorted out.
“You have to bear in mind, especially with Nathaniel, that we want him to focus on the last few games of the season. That’s why you’ll get players saying, ‘let’s wait until the end of the season’.
“That’s quite normal and he’s very happy. He’s managed to force himself into the England squad and is showcasing his talents.
“I’d be very surprised if there wasn’t speculation about him, but at the moment the signs are good.”
Clyne has scored three goals in 89 Premier League appearances for Southampton after the full-back moved to St Mary’s from Crystal Palace in 2012.
The England defender has one year remaining on the contract that he signed with the south coast club when he first moved to the Saints.
