Man United will eye title bid next season, says Liverpool legend
Jamie Carragher talks up Manchester United as potential Premier League title contenders next season
Jamie Carragher believes Manchester United will start to believe that they can challenge for the Premier League title next season.
The Red Devils edged to a 4-2 victory over Manchester City on Sunday courtesy of goals from Ashley Young, Marouane Fellaini, Juan Mata and Chris Smalling against Manuel Pellegrini’s side.
The 20-time English champions haven’t won the Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson guided the Manchester club to top-flight glory in his final season in charge at Old Trafford in 2013.
However, Liverpool legend Carragher reckons that there is a growing belief about the potential of the current United crop under Louis van Gaal after an impressive second half of the season.
“When you finish seventh last year and a new manager comes in, your job is to get into the top four,” Carragher told talkSPORT.
“It doesn’t matter how they play, or were playing, they were getting results.
“United have been in the top four for the last three or four months now probably, and it’s only in the last four to six weeks that we’ve seen the performances to go with it.
“People have more belief now in what he’s trying to do. Next season he will be bedded in, the football will come, he’ll have more players he wants and people will be more used to him.
“The fact it [the improved performances] has come before the end of the season is a real bonus for them. Looking at them now, people will start getting the idea they could go on and win the league next season.”
United are four points clear of fourth-placed Manchester City after their impressive derby triumph against their bitter rivals on Sunday.
Van Gaal’s side make the trip to Premier League leaders Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in their next top-flight outing.
