Martin Keown: Arsenal can compete with Chelsea for title next season
Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown talks up the Gunners chances of competing for the title next season
Arsenal will rival Chelsea in the Premier League title race next season, according to Martin Keown.
The Gunners are one of the form sides in Europe in 2015 despite a discouraging start to the year which saw Arsenal lose 2-0 to Southampton on New Year’s Day.
They need to strengthen in one or two positions but I’m not talking about wholesale changes which some others may have to make if they want to compete
Since that St Mary’s defeat, Arsenal have lost just once in the Premier League and the north Londoners have won their last eight top-flight games to move to within nine points of leaders Chelsea.
Former Gunners defender Keown, who won three Premier League titles under Arsene Wenger, reckons Arsenal can compete with Jose Mourinho’s men next term with some shrewd signings over the summer.
“Chelsea will win it now but if you ask them next season they won’t fear anyone but they will be aware of Arsenal,” Keown is quoted as saying by The Guardian.
“They will want to challenge next season and they will want to start well next year.
“They need to strengthen in one or two positions but I’m not talking about wholesale changes which some others may have to make if they want to compete.”
Arsenal face Reading in their FA Cup semi-final at Wembley on Saturday as Wenger’s side look to retain their trophy after last season’s triumph over Hull City.
The Gunners’ next Premier League game is a clash against leaders Chelsea at Emirates Stadium on 26 April.
